Is Old School Bar Soap the New Clean?

To analog junkies raised on old-school favorites like Dove and Dial, bar soap seems like an unlikely candidate for a comeback. Yet in the creative communities out of New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, and beyond, a growing number of modern makers have set about reinventing the practical staple with equal attention to aesthetics and well-sourced ingredients. The resurgence also brings attention to established bar brands you may have forgotten about. If there’s an emotional connection for the people who produce them then there must be a mutual multi-sensory nostalgic connection for those who have traded in body wash for beautifully crafted bars. The new soaps on the market lately are attractive like liquid jewels, abstract like paintings and aromatic with therapeutic natural oils that enhance physical and psychological well being. Here's some our faves.

A staple in India since 1940, Chandrika Ayurvedic soap is one of the original vegetable oil soaps on the market.  The simple, natural ingredients of coconut oil, wild ginger, lime peel oil, hydnocarpus oil, orange oil, and sandalwood oil give it the most incredible fragrance.

Folie, the new apothecary line from Nikisha Brunson is 100% natural and handcrafted in small batches by the owner herself. Folie products have no parabens, no Synthetic preservatives, no petroleum or mineral oil, no sulfates, no silicone, no phthalates, no fragrance oils. 3 piece set available on Saint Heron.

Binu Binu (Korean for “soap soap”) is the handmade beauty line of Karen Kim Hung, inspired by the country’s famed spa rituals and cultural touchstones. Kim’s nourishing formulas feature ingredients like crushed sesame seeds, fine clay, and boricha—a detoxifying roasted-barley tea ubiquitous in Korean households.
The legacy of Sofi Tucker, Shea Moisture has been selling organic, natural and sustainable products for years. Our first favorite, the African Black Soap with Shea Butter is designed to cleanse, hydrate and calm problem skin. It balances oily skin for clearer complexions. Our other favorite is the Coconut and Hibiscus Shea Butter soap that  cleanses, moisturizes and naturally brightens dull skin and helps to firm and even skin tone.
